Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hosts Fifth Annual SINAInnovations conference and First SINAIMedMaker Challenge
Newswise — (New York – September 28, 2016) – A new health care technology competition is among the events planned for the fifth annual SINAInnovations conference, which will be held next month at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
This year’s SINAInnovations, with the theme of “Therapeutic Discovery,” will be held October 25-26, and will include keynote addresses, panel discussions, and breakout sessions featuring international thought leaders across the range of relevant fields. Keynote speakers will include Suprotik (Protik) Basu, Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Health in Agenda 2030 and for Malaria; Drew M. Pardoll, MD, PhD, Abeloff Professorship of Oncology, Director of the Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, and Co-Director of Cancer Immunology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; and Manolis Kellis, PhD, Professor of Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Institute Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT, and Director of the MIT Computational Biology Group. Renowned ISMMS faculty will also present alongside these and other thought leaders.
“As we embark on our fifth year of SINAInnovations, Mount Sinai remains deeply committed to innovation and discovery. This conference brings together great minds and thought leaders in both medicine and technology, with the ultimate goal of improving human health globally and locally,” said Scott L. Friedman, MD, Dean for Therapeutic Discovery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and director of the conference.
Sessions and lectures will include Drug Development in Academia, Target Identification and Validation, Industry-Academic Medical Center Partnerships, Funding Drug Discovery, Health Disparities and Drug Discovery for the Developing World, Clinical Trial Advances and Novel First-in-man Approaches, and Therapeutic Frontiers in Oncology. The conference will define the astonishing advances in drug discovery, and outline ways to overcome obstacles.
SINAIMedMaker Challenge, a new satellite event of SINAInnovations, will be held October 21-23, the weekend prior to the conference. Groups of diverse, motivated individuals will form multidisciplinary teams to create novel solutions for the management, monitoring, and treatment of pain and fatigue. Each team member will serve in the role of a Clinical Specialist, Bioinformatics/Biomedical Specialist, Software Developer, Hardware Developer, or Product/UI/UX Designer. The teams will work intensely over 48 hours to brainstorm and develop their technologies, and at the close of the Challenge, each team will pitch its solution to a panel of experts. The winning team will present its solution at the end of the SINAInnovations Conference.
