ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Results of the SPRINT blood pressure study showed an advantage to those patients who go low on their blood pressure numbers.

The promising study results quickly became a hot topic at the 2015 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions and could mean a new approach for treating the millions of Americans with high blood pressure.

Experts at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center are available to give their input on the study that provides solid support for an intensive approach to lowering blood pressure to less than 120 mm Hg.

“Since it was a large, well-designed study with impressive results, SPRINT is likely to have a big impact on practice,” says J. Brian Byrd, MD, MS, FAHA, FACC, cardiologist and hypertension specialist at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center. “It is likely that healthcare providers will be taking the results into consideration when they see older patients with high blood pressure."
