Newswise — June 16, 2015 (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) – What happens when more than 200 physicists from around the globe gather to discuss the future of the field at the world’s largest independent theoretical physics research centre? Convergence.

From June 20-24, 2015, Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics will host the Convergence conference, which features on-site and online opportunities for physicists to discuss the future of the field.

“Physics is at a watershed moment. The most powerful-ever experiments are revealing our universe with unprecedented clarity – from the quantum to the cosmos,” says Neil Turok, cosmologist and director of Perimeter Institute. “The time is right for Convergence, a gathering of world-leading researchers at Perimeter Institute to discuss the field's most exciting frontiers and help chart a course for the future.”

The conference, which will be webcast live and feature many opportunities for off-site participants to engage in the discussion online, is sponsored by BMO Financial Group.

Speakers include eminent physicists such as Immanuel Bloch, Savas Dimopoulos, Nergis Mavalvala, Subir Sachdev, Sara Seager, and Maria Spiropulu, among others. The subject matter will be truly universal in scope, with talks on particle physics, quantum foundations, quantum information, the Event Horizon Telescope, exoplanets and more. A full list of speakers and topics, with a partial list of attendees, is available online.

Convergence will feature full days of talks and discussions on June 22-24, with live webcasts beginning each day at 9am EDT. Online participants can watch, join the live-chat, find news and information on the Convergence website, and join the conversation on Twitter with the hashtag #piCONVERGE. Sign up to receive daily email reminders to tune-in to the live webcast.

The event will also celebrate, through commemorative evening lectures on June 22 and 23, the centenaries of two defining discoveries of the 20th century: Noether’s theorem and Einstein’s theory of general relativity. These lectures will also be webcast live on the Convergence website.
