Following Wednesday morning’s powerful earthquake in Italy, experts are urging those in disaster zones to consider the impact of trauma on children.

Virginia Tech clinical psychologist Russell T. Jones is a nationally recognized expert on the topic of disaster trauma, natural disasters and posttraumatic stress. He says all too often, parents and family members are caught up with the disaster’s impact and don’t take into account the effect on young people. “Children are frequently suffering in silence,” said Jones. “Often, no one is looking out for the kids.” Jones’ research indicates it’s the number one factor for helping young people deal with tragedy. “Children absolutely need the support of their parents, family and friends to overcome the fear and anxiety that may accompany a disaster,” he said.

As an experienced clinician and researcher with traumatized children he has published extensively and spoken to both national and international audiences. Read Jones’ Bio

In addition, Virginia Tech professor Russell Green, a geotechnical engineering expert, is available to speak about his international research in the areas of seismology and earthquake engineering.

Green's work focuses on lowering the risk of damage from future earthquakes worldwide. He and his students have performed collaborative work in New Zealand, Japan, Iceland, Haiti, China, and Dubai, among others. The results of his research are currently being used in the rebuilding of Christchurch, New Zealand, and Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following recent devastating earthquakes.
