Newswise — CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia — 10 November 2014 — The Journal of Marketing Education ranked Rajkumar Venkatesan, Bank of America Research Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, among the top five percent of faculty researchers in the marketing management and strategy area of business schools.

Authors of the study, “Global Benchmarking of Marketing Doctoral Program Faculty and Institutions by Subarea,” determined the five most popular marketing doctoral program subareas, which included marketing management and strategy and the top five scholarly marketing journals for those five areas.

The study identified scholars who actively published two or more articles in the top five marketing journals in each subarea for the 10-year period from 2003-2012 and limited the article selection to the most highly cited articles. During the period covered by the study, Venkatesan’s research impact reached 227 cities.

The study also compared U.S-based and non-U.S. based research impact and determined that the top performing faculty comes from the United States.

“Impactful research starts with asking the right questions,” said Venkatesan. “Darden’s student centered culture, the emphasis on research that is relevant for practice and the ecosystem that exposes faculty to current industry practices and challenges have been extremely important in shaping the kind of questions I ask in my research.”

The study emphasizes that research productivity of a school’s marketing faculty can improve employment prospects for recent graduates of the doctoral program.

Venkatesan is an expert in customer relationship management, marketing metrics and analytics, and mobile marketing. His research focuses on developing customer-centric marketing strategies that provide measurable financial results.

In 2014, he published with co-authors Darden Professors Ronald T. Wilcox and Paul W. Farris the book Cutting-Edge Marketing Analytics: Real-World Cases and Datasets for Hands-on Learning.
