Newswise — Journal of Food Science, the peer-reviewed science journal published by the not-for-profit scientific society Institute of Food Technologists, has been designated a high priority serial by the U.S. Library of Congress, one of only 300 publications to gain such assignment.

The library informed IFT this month that JFS was selected for expedited processing, intended for its Congressional Research Service and Law Library to satisfy the research and information needs of the U.S. Congress.

IFT has been asked for and will provide two copies of each printed issue directly to the library, where it will be distributed within 24 hours of receipt. This expedited deposits project makes it possible for library users to have access to publications nearly immediately.

"We at IFT and the Journal of Food Science are very happy to be honored in this way," said Daryl B. Lund, editor-in-chief of JFS, "We feel it reflects the hard work and dedication of the editors involved in producing each issue of the journal, as well as the quality of the science and scientists represented in its pages."

The serials on this Library of Congress list are not limited to food or science, but are interdisciplinary and cross subject areas. Others on the list range from The Astrophysical Journal, to The Chronicle of Higher Education, to Harvard Law Review.

Since 1936, Journal of Food Science has been IFT's premier science journal, containing peer-reviewed reports of original research and critical reviews of all aspects of food science. Today it publishes more than 500 papers a year in nine issues"more than 3,000 pages of original research and scientific reviews. Unlimited access to abstracts of original research published in JFS can be gained online via IFT's Web site, http://www.ift.org.

Founded in 1939, and with world headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, USA, the Institute of Food Technologists is a not-for-profit international scientific society with 28,000 members working in food science, technology and related professions in industry, academia and government. As the society for food science and technology, IFT brings sound science to the public discussion of food issues. For more on IFT, see http://www.ift.org.
