Newswise — May 21, 2015 (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) – Niels Bohr was a Nobel-winning physicist, a gifted teacher, a statesman, humanitarian – but even those labels don’t quite tell the whole story, if you ask his grandson.

During a live webcast on Wednesday June 3, that grandson, Vilhelm Bohr, will provide his first-hand recollections of the lesser-known Niels Bohr: the nature lover, the joke-teller, the footballer.

“He knew he had great insight,” Vilhelm said of his grandfather, who pioneered atomic theory and was among the founding fathers of quantum physics. “But at the same time, he was a very humble person, who always acknowledged others. His openness, his honesty – they were pretty unique to him.”

The talk, titled “Niels Bohr: Life Behind the Physics,” is part of the Perimeter Institute Public Lecture Series presented by Sun Life Financial, and will be webcast live from Perimeter June 3.

Vilhelm Bohr was born in Copenhagen in 1950. He earned a degree in Medicine at the University of Copenhagen in 1978, and later earned a PhD and Doctor of Science from the same university. Since 1992, he has chaired the National Institute on Aging in Bethesda, Maryland. He has published more than 500 original papers in biomedical research, mainly about genome stability and DNA repair, and has received several awards including honorary doctoral assignments. Vilhelm is a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Science and the chair of the Niels Bohr Archive in Copenhagen.

Vilhelm’s public lecture will be webcast live on Wednesday June 3, 2015, at 7 pm EDT. Viewers can pose questions for Vilhelm’s post-lecture Q&A by tweeting to @Perimeter and using the hashtag #piLIVE. Click here to sign up to receive an email reminder about the live webcast.
