In recognition of the VA’s announcement of an additional $207 million for community-based organizations supporting homeless and at-risk veterans and their families, the Institute of Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University is expanding its Community of Practice, community-centered efforts which support the VA’s mission to address veteran homelessness and prevent another generation of veterans from living on the streets.

Blue Star Families Fifth Annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey Shows Effects of 13 Years of War

Blue Star Families, the largest chapter-based military families support organization in the country, today announced the results of its fifth annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey. The key concerns identified by the responding military service members, veterans, and family members were pay/benefits and changes to retirement benefits. Other issues included military spouse employment, the effects of deployment on children, military lifestyle uncertainty, the military civilian divide, and the VA disability backlog. Additionally, this year’s survey also revealed information on financial readiness, caregiving, mental health, transition, and the impact of downsizing on the military community.

Women Veterans and Military Spouse Business Leaders Empowered by First of Its Kind New York City Conference

The tenth iteration of the Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (V-WISE) program will be the program’s largest to date and first in New York City. From June 13-15, a seasoned group of business leaders, educators, military leaders, and resource providers will converge in Times Square to help more than 200 women veterans, transitioning female service members, and military wives realize their business dreams. The women will learn what it takes to lead in today’s economy through a series of inspiring talks and breakout sessions focused on topics ranging from raising capital to business law.

VA Triples Down on Funding to Prevent Homeless Vets

The Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF) is pleased to announce that its efforts in support of New York State community organizations serving veterans and their families have yielded more than $26 million in Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) grants offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Twenty-three SSVF programs have secured VA funding to prevent homelessness among 7,000 veteran households in New York State, more than triple the amount of funding earmarked to serve New York State veteran’s families, as 11 grantees were awarded a total of $8 million last year.
