How Smokers Can Stay Quit After New Year’s: Requit Mondays, Worldwide Study Shows

Instead of encouraging smokers to plan one quit attempt around New Year’s, which comes only once a year, experts believe a better strategy would be to follow a New Year’s quit with a weekly recommitment to quit that takes advantage of natural weekly cycles. In a 2013 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers found that Mondays acted like a “mini-New Year’s” in terms of the numbers of people going online to search for help in quitting smoking. Every week, there was a spike in Google searches for “quit smoking,” demonstrating that people are more open to quitting on Mondays than other days of the week.
