The UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Spam Data Mine reports that a new spam trend using MSNBC began shortly after 3 a.m. this morning. Because the new spam attack is based on the actual emails sent to MSNBC Alert subscribers, it will be nearly impossible to block to the spam without also blocking legitimate MSNBC mail, said Gary Warner, director of Computer Forensics.
An April Fools computer virus is no joke. Warner, says, "The scariest thing is that almost no anti-virus products are currently detecting this virus, which has already been seen more than 100 times in the UAB Spam Data Mine."
Last year security researchers saw the creation of the world's largest "botnet", or collection of personal computers being controlled by hackers," said Gary Warner, director of Research in Computer Forensics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). "This botnet, called "the Storm Botnet," has at various times included more than 3 million infected computers," Warner said. "One of the primary ways machines became infected was by users clicking on e-mails that were often associated with holidays, including Valentine's Day, Labor Day, Fourth of July and others.
