Medicare Approval of DNA Colorectal Cancer Test Should Lead to Virtual Colonoscopy Coverage

The evidence standard that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) used to approve Medicare coverage of a stool DNA colorectal cancer (CRC) screening test, under a new joint approval process with the Food and Drug Administration, should be applied to CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) and other CRC screening exams. BMJ Article on Breast Cancer Screening Effectiveness: Incredibly Flawed and Misleading

According to the American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging, the recent breast cancer screening article (Miller et al) published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) (1) is an incredibly misleading analysis based on the deeply flawed and widely discredited Canadian National Breast Screening Study (CNBSS). The results of this BMJ study, and others resulting from the CNBSS trial, should not be used to create breast cancer screening policy as this would place a great many women at increased risk of dying unnecessarily from breast cancer.

ACR Development of Standards and Infrastructure Underway to Support USPSTF Recommended CT Lung Cancer Screening Programs

The American College of Radiology (ACR) supports the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation (Grade B) for low-dose computed tomography (CT) lung cancer screening of adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. National Lung Cancer Screening Trial (NLST) results and other evidence show that CT lung cancer screening significantly reduces lung cancer deaths. The ACR is completing evidence-based infrastructure to help ensure patient access to uniform, quality care and a similar life-saving benefit to that shown in clinical trials.
