Newswise — MAYWOOD, Ill. -- Loyola University Medical Center is ranked among the top four Chicago-area hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's new metro area rankings.

The magazine ranked each hospital in 16 specialties. At Loyola, four specialties were ranked among the best in the nation and eight other specialties were designated as "high performing."

To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital has to place among the top 50 hospitals in the country. Loyola's four nationally ranked specialties are heart and heart surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; urology; and ear, nose and throat. Loyola's heart and heart surgery specialty has been nationally ranked for eight years in a row.

To be designated high-performing in a specialty, the hospital has to score in the top 25 percent among its peers. Loyola's high-performing specialties are: cancer, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, kidney disorders, orthopaedics and pulmonology.

Overall, Loyola University Medical Center ranked 4th in the Chicago area.Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, which is part of Loyola University Health System, also was listed among the best hospitals in Chicago. Gottlieb has one high-performing specialty, urology.
