Newswise — MAYWOOD, Ill. – Two Loyola University Health System sports medicine physicians will be official team physicians for the men’s and women’s hockey teams during the 2015 Winter World University Games Feb. 4 – 14 in Granada, Spain.
The University Games is the largest global winter multi-sports event for student athletes. Among all winter competitions, only the winter Olympics has more events and athletes.
Haemi Choi, MD, will be team physician for the Women’s National University Hockey Team and Douglas Evans, MD, will care for the Men’s National University Hockey Team. Dr. Evans and Dr. Choi also served as hockey team physicians during the 2013 University Games in Italy, and Dr. Evans served as team physician for both the men’s and women’s teams during the 2011 University Games in Turkey.
“It’s a great event, and our student athletes are wonderful ambassadors for their country,” Dr. Evans said. “Plus, the level of competition is fantastic.”
Dr. Choi said she and Dr. Evans will bring Loyola medical and surgical expertise to the frontlines of competitive hockey. “We look forward to providing care to ensure the team is physically equipped to meet the challenges of the Winter Games."
Dr. Evans and Dr. Choi said hockey injuries they may be called upon to treat include concussions, lacerations, shoulder problems, sprains and strains. They also will help provide medical care to athletes in other competitions.
More than 2,500 participants from more than 50 countries will compete in hockey, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, snowboarding, curling and skating events. Dr. Evans is an associate professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation and Dr. Choi is an assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.
