Newswise — LSU announced today the formation of a new hurricane and coastal risks assessment group to provide advice and support before, during and after an emergency situation.

The LSU Office of Research and Economic Development recently formed the Coastal Risks Assessment group, or LSU CRA, which consists of heads of institutes, centers and laboratories capable of providing critical advice to local, state and federal emergency response groups in the event of a hurricane or other environmental emergency.

LSU CRA member institutes include:

"¢ Southern Regional Climate Center, or SRCC "¢ LSU Hurricane Center "¢ Wave-Current-Surge Information System for Coastal Louisiana, or WAVCIS "¢ Earth Scan Laboratory "¢ Louisiana Water Resources Research Institute, or LWRRI "¢ Center for Geoinformatics "¢ LSU Transportation Lab "¢ Computer Aided Design & Geographic Information Systems, or CADGIS "¢ Sea Grant Development "¢ Center for Computation and Technology, or CCT In an emergency situation, LSU CRA will be activated based on advice from the SRCC and LSU Hurricane Center. The group will then meet on a regular basis for updates from operational teams on present environmental conditions and forecasting advice.

Information and advice from LSU CRA will go to the director of the SRCC for dissemination to emergency personnel. Robert Twilley, associate vice chancellor of research and economic development at LSU, director of the Coastal Systems and Society Initiative and professor of coastal sciences, will notify the LSU administration.

In advance of an event and during the emergency response period, LSU CRA will provide: "¢ weather observation and advisories "¢ satellite images "¢ wave and storm-surge forecasting advice "¢ elevation and flood potential "¢ water- and environmental-quality advice "¢ wind-damage and public-safety advice "¢ transportation issues and advice "¢ GIS tools and integrated information delivery "¢ visualization products of an event
