Newswise — September 5, 2013 – Neptune, NJ – Mark J. Krasna, M.D., corporate medical director of Oncology, Meridian Cancer Care and chair of the Esophageal Cancer Task Force for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), in collaboration with a team of clinical leaders from around the world, recently published Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Staging of Patients with Esophageal Cancer.

Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Staging of Patients with Esophageal Cancer addresses the factors affecting the treatment of localized esophageal cancer. For this systematic review on the diagnosis and staging of esophageal cancer, the authors reviewed all the current literature and carefully calculated the level of evidence to support each of the proposed guidelines. Dr. Krasna’s editorial accompanying the first installment of the guidelines was also published. “With guidelines like these in place, the multi-disciplinary team of physicians at Meridian Cancer Care is helping to raise the quality standards for the care of esophageal cancer patients,” comments Dr. Krasna.

Additionally, Dr. Krasna recently delivered two talks entitled “Esophageal cancer in the US: an Overview” and “The Best Location for Esophageal Anastomosis” at the 12th OESO World Congress – a global conference dedicated to diseases of the esophagus. Three more guideline papers featuring Dr. Krasna as senior author are to be published over the next year by the taskforce.
