Rebecca Robich, a former doctoral student at Ohio State University and now a research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, emerges from a sewer in Columbus, OH, where she and colleagues were studying mosquitoes. Robich and David Denlinger, professor of entomology at Ohio State, isolated three genes that cause female mosquitoes to change their diet in a way that enables them to enter a kind of hibernation for the winter.
