At the heart of the PHENIX detector, a silicon vertex tracker (layers behind the “X” shaped black support structure) surrounds the point where collisions take place. With forward silicon vertex trackers at each end of the barrel (one being adjusted by a technician), these components track particles made of heavy quarks streaming out of RHIC collisions.
