The 1890s development of medical instruments that allowed physicians to see inside the eyeball meant the 1912 total solar eclipse over Europe provided one of the first opportunities to show the damage eclipse-viewing can cause -- like these retinal burns drawn by a German physician in his article “The effect of Sun Exposure on the Eyes.”
