WVU researchers identified factors that make a patient more likely to transition from short-term to long-term opioid therapy. Their findings suggest that the opioid’s duration of action and its parent compounds, the patient’s history of drug-use disorder and the patient’s medical conditions associated with pain may increase the odds of long-term opioid use.
