MEDIA ADVISORYMilitary historian available to discuss Battle of Gettysburg

ROLLA, Mo. – For journalists interested in the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg or the leadership lessons from that battle, Dr. John C. McManus, a military historian and one of the nation’s leading experts on Americans in combat, is available to discuss the battle’s significance to succeeding generations.

“The Battle of Gettysburg was a highly important moment in American history that had significant consequences for succeeding generations,” says McManus, a professor of military history at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo.

McManus, who has written 10 books on military history, says that “one of the most interesting aspects of Gettysburg is the evolving attitude about Pickett’s Charge, especially for southerners.” Pickett’s Charge refers to an infantry assault by the Confederate army on July 3, 1863, the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Named after Man. Gen. George Pickett, the attack has been seen as an avoidable mistake that may have been the turning point of the Civil War.

“There are, of course, leadership lessons from the battle as well,” McManus says.

McManus’s books include U.S. Military History for Dummies, The Americans at D-Day, The Americans at Normandy and Grunts: Inside the American Infantry Combat Experience, World War II Through Iraq. His most recent book, September Hope: The American Side of a Bridge Too Far, was published in June 2012.
