Newswise — WASHINGTON, DC (December 1, 2014)—Milken Institute School of Public Health (Milken Institute SPH) at the George Washington University will hold an event on December 5 to highlight the challenges and opportunities faced by high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as they transition from high school to adulthood. The event will highlight the work of the Autism Transition Project (ATP), a two-year research initiative that aims to better understand from the school and family perspective what these challenges and opportunities are as high school students prepare for the adult world.

An estimated three million Americans are currently living with ASD, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Experts estimate that within the next decade about half a million children and teens with ASD will enter adulthood and may need additional services and support in order to lead independent and successful lives. In fact, a 2012 study found that only half of young adults with autism had enrolled in an institution of higher education or had employment in the six years following high school graduation.

Join us on Friday, December 5 for a conference that will explore what has been learned so far with the ATP, a project that has interviewed parents, educators, autism experts and others on the front lines of this issue. The ATP is operated by The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools, a nonpartisan resource, policy and technical assistance center at Milken Institute SPH.

Kim Van Naarden Braun, an autism expert from the CDC, will kick off the forum with a keynote address in the morning. The afternoon sessions will include a panel discussion with educational leaders, and people who are working to help students navigate the world of employment or higher education; as well as parents who will talk about launching a young adult with ASD.
