Mount Sinai Health System Launches Online Patient Experience Ratings

Newswise — (New York – October 13, 2016) – Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) today began posting patient experience ratings for its doctors, becoming the largest academic health system in New York City to do so. A star rating, based on patients’ responses to select questions from a nationally validated, standardized survey developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), will be posted to physicians’ profiles on the Mount Sinai “Find a Doctor” website.

Star ratings are calculated from patient surveys received following a medical office visit. Patients rate physicians on a one-to-five scale based upon how well the physician explained things, how well the physician listened, and the likelihood of recommending the physician’s office. In accordance with industry practice, only physicians with at least 30 completed surveys in the most recent 18 months will have star ratings. “Our patients and prospective patients are smart consumers of health care services,” said Sandra Myerson, Senior Vice President and Chief Patient Experience Officer, The Joseph F. Cullman, Jr. Institute for Patient Experience, Mount Sinai Health System. “Consumers want to be informed when deciding how to spend their health care dollars and we want to provide them with the information they seek. This is an opportunity to build loyalty with our patients and those considering our services.”

“Online reviews provide a vital source of information for patients that will help them make informed choices,” said Jeremy Boal, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Mount Sinai Health System. “Transparency helps build trust and it is an important way to engage and strengthen relationships with our patients.”

Patients routinely research ratings when making health care choices. Websites such as ZocDoc, Yelp, Vitals, and Healthgrades already allow anyone to post ratings and reviews of physicians, without verification. Providing reliable ratings on our “Find a Doctor” website makes it easier for patients to feel confident about their physician selection.

In launching these star ratings, the Health System joins other nationally prominent hospitals and medical centers, including the Cleveland Clinic, Stanford Health, Duke University Medical Center, and the University of Utah Medical Center.
