Mount Sinai Heart Observes National Cholesterol Education Month This September

Newswise — (NEW YORK – September 1, 2016) – This September, Mount Sinai Heart will host free cholesterol screening fairs in honor of National Cholesterol Education Month, to raise awareness and educate its communities and employees about the importance of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

“High cholesterol is one of the most significant contributors to a person’s risk of a heart attack or stroke,” said Beth Oliver, RN, DNP, Senior Vice President of Cardiac Services for the Mount Sinai Health System. “Screening is the key to detecting high cholesterol, since it does not cause symptoms. If detected, health care providers can work with their patients to lower their cholesterol through healthy lifestyle changes or medications.”

There are two kinds of cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also called "good" cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also called "bad" cholesterol. The recommended level of total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL. LDL is recommended to be 100 mg/dL or lower, HDL to be 40 mg/dL or higher, and triglycerides (another type of fat in the blood) to be 149 mg/dL or lower.

The Mount Sinai Heart cholesterol fairs will offer community members free heart health screenings for total cholesterol (LDL, HDL, and triglycerides) and body mass index (BMI), as well as heart health educational activities and heart-healthy food samples with recipe cards.
