Mount Sinai Launches First CME-Accredited Course on Coursera On-Demand Platform Newswise — (New York, June 14, 2016) – The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) has launched the first CME credit course on the Coursera On Demand MOOC (massive open, online course) platform. The course, “Acute and Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Comprehensive Review,” was created and implemented by the Departments of Academic Informatics and Technology and Otolaryngology, in conjunction with the Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) at ISMMS.

Hosted by Instructor Satish Govindaraj, MD, Associate Professor and Chief of the Division of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at Mount Sinai, the course aims to help primary care physicians, otolaryngologists and the general public broaden their understanding of how to diagnose and treat patients suffering from acute and chronic rhinosinusitis, a condition that causes infection and irritation of the sinuses.

“Increasing demand for the virtual classroom, coupled with Coursera’s 10+ million learners worldwide, is what drew Mount Sinai to Coursera’s MOOC pedagogy,” notes Paul Lawrence, Vice President of Academic Informatics and Technology and Associate Dean at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “The flexibility of taking multiple remote modules, versus attending an entire course in one sitting, is a game changer. This format enhances engagement, attendance, and outcomes.”

The course is structured into four modules: Module 1: Normal Sinus Anatomy and Function Module 2: Acute Rhinosinusitis: Diagnosis and Treatment Module 3: Chronic Rhinoinusitis: Diagnosis and Treatment Module 4: The Role of Surgery for Sinusitis

Participants may take the course at no cost, pay for the official Coursera Certificate and CME credits. Physicians participating in this course have the option to receive 1.75 CME credits after successfully completing the course.

“We have enhanced the On Demand platform with an added access to CME options,” adds Leah Belsky, Vice President of Partnerships and Premium Learning Experiences at Coursera. “We look forward to partnering with other distinguished universities in offering this enhanced format, as well as increased engagement from the medical community in using Coursera as an educational resource for CME credits.”
