Newswise — The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will highlight trends and issues that are helping to make patient safety a major priority on the national agenda. These developments will be presented at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) 17th Annual Meeting & Clinical Congress, by Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, Director, on Friday, May 16, 2008, at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando.

"Last year, $2.3 trillion was spent on health care, but quality treatment wasn't close to equaling that," Dr. Clancy said. "All of the attention the system is getting today gives us an opportunity to do something about this " to ensure that we are improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans."

To help course-correct problems in the healthcare industry, AHRQ has identified several major priorities for 2008, which will be discussed in greater length at the AACE Annual Meeting. Highlights include:

"¢ Patient Safety"¢ Effective Health Care"¢ Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys"¢ Ambulatory Patient Safety"¢ Other Research & Dissemination Activities

"In order to best protect the patient, nothing can be left to chance," AACE President and AHRQ Board member Richard Hellman said. "A comprehensive system must be designed and implemented in order to reach acceptable levels of patient safety."

The focus on patient safety is an important aspect for this year's AACE Annual Meeting. Also at the meeting, Dr. Peter Angood will be hosting a general session on the topic and a keynote address, by President & CEO of The National Quality Forum Janet M. Corrigan, PhD, MBA, will focus on "Improving Safety and Quality: Key Initiatives on the National Agenda."
