Who: Keith L. Black, MD, chair and professor of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Department of Neurosurgery, director of the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute, director of the Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Brain Tumor Center, Ruth and Lawrence Harvey Chair in Neuroscience.

What: Black will speak at the African First Ladies Health Summit, hosted by US Doctors for Africa.

When: Black’s presentation is scheduled to begin at approximately 2:15 p.m., Tuesday, April 2. The summit will be April 2 through 4.

Why: The event brings together first ladies of countries in Africa because they have a unique opportunity to influence health systems and the well-being of women and families in their countries. The first summit, in Los Angeles in 2009, included 15 African first ladies. Delegations from 26 countries and representatives from seven other nations met with representatives of non-governmental organizations, companies that do business in Africa and development experts, educators, analysts and doctors to identify ways to help empower Africa’s women and girls and to discuss healthcare issues, needs and challenges facing women.

The African First Ladies Health Summit is coordinated by U.S. Doctors for Africa, a humanitarian, charitable organization committed to increasing access to medical care for diseases and conditions affecting the people of Africa. USDFA delivers multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals and equipment to resource-poor regions in Africa.

More: Other speakers at the summit include the first ladies of Guinea, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia and Niger. Also participating will be the health ministers, second ladies and other representatives from Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, and Angola. U.S. and U.N. representatives include Annette Richardson, Mark Antonio Grant, Congresswomen Diane Watson, Karen Bass, Maxine Waters, and others.
