New Intellectual Property Law Certificate Program Announced by Georgia State College of Law

Newswise — Georgia State University College of Law is adding a certificate in intellectual property (IP) to its specialty academic programs.

Answering to the increasing demand for curricular specializations, the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law joins the college’s existing certificate programs in health law, and environmental and land use law.  “The demand for lawyers with specific knowledge in IP law has been increasing since the 1970s and with it the demand for schools to offer additional opportunities for students to acquire the skills necessary to compete in today’s job market,” said Scott Frank (J.D./M.B.A. ’94), president of AT&T Intellectual Property and chair of the Georgia State Law Intellectual Property Advisory Board.

“We are now providing students with a clear, integrated and streamlined course of study in IP law,” said Yaniv Heled, associate professor of law and co-director of the college’s new Center for Intellectual Property. “The certificate will signal to employers the students’ depth of knowledge in this competitive field.”

The certificate complements Georgia State Law’s focus on IP law, reflected in its overall Intellectual Property Program alongside its new Center for Intellectual Property and the alumni IP Advisory Board.

“We are excited to offer this new certificate to our students, starting this fall,” said Steven J. Kaminshine, Georgia State Law dean and professor of law. “The certificate is consistent with our school’s strategic plans and initiatives to provide students with a considerably more integrated course of study that develops substantive knowledge, practical skills, professional judgment and a robust advisement program.”

Students enjoy a variety of programs and opportunities in the area of intellectual property law, including an annual National Student IP Writing Competition, an IP Students Mentoring Program, the Southeastern IP Job Fair, coaching for IP moot-court competitions, IP scholarships and the Summer IP Program in Washington, D.C.
