Newswise — WASHINGTON, DC (October 30, 2014)—Health Information & the Law, a project at Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University, today launched a new interview series called “Perspectives from the Field” showcasing experts in the fields of medicine, health policy, and law and looks specifically at their views on health information exchange.
“This new resource allows our followers to hear directly from experts in the field about the role of health information in their work,” says Lara Cartwright-Smith, JD, MPH, project co-director and associate research professor of health policy at Milken Institute SPH. “These candid interviews reveal some of the challenges and opportunities leaders have encountered as the transformation of our health care delivery system continues to evolve toward a more patient-centered, value-based system.”
Materials posted now online include streaming audio with accompanying visuals, interview transcripts, and links to related materials and resources on the topic at hand.
This new resource joins a growing collection of materials available on the Health Information & the Law website, including policy briefs, decision-support tools, and comparative maps addressing a range of issues related to health information, including federal and state privacy and security laws, health information exchange efforts, fraud and abuse, and new care delivery and payment models.
“Reading or listening to these interviews offers a unique window into the dynamic world of health information,” says Jane Hyatt Thorpe, JD, project co-director and associate professor of health policy at Milken Institute SPH. “These resources help users track and understand the changing policy and legal landscape of health information that holds the key to the rapid transformation of the healthcare system.”
Interviews of the following experts are now available at the Health Information & the Law website:
• Eric Goplerud, PhD, senior vice president and director, NORC’s Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Criminal Justice Studies Department;
• Neil Calman, MD, ABFP, FAAFP, president and CEO, Institute For Family Health and Chair, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; and
• Jeff Levi, PhD, executive director, Trust for America’s Health and chair, Obama Administration’s Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative Public Health. Health Information & the Law is a project of the George Washington University’s Hirsh Health Law and Policy Program. It was developed with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is designed to serve as a practical online resource to federal and state laws governing access, use, release and publication of health information. Constantly updated, the site addresses the current legal and regulatory framework of health information law and changes in the legal and policy landscape impacting health information law and its implementation with commentary and key documents.
The website offers descriptions and links to individual federal and state laws and regulations, is searchable on topics such as “antitrust,” “confidentiality,” “privacy,” “quality,” and “security of information,” and provides timely analyses of key health information law issues. It also allows users to see and understand the application of the law in their own geographic areas and how state law intersects with federal requirements and programs.
