Newswise — NEW ORLEANS – Oct. 12, 2014 – The American Society of Anesthesiologists® (ASA) will sponsor the Run For The Warriors® 5K Run/Walk at 6 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, in New Orleans. The race coincides with the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2014 annual meeting and marks the fifth consecutive year of ASA sponsorship of the event.

All proceeds from the New Orleans race will benefit Hope For The Warriors®, a national nonprofit organization that assists post-9/11 service members, their families and families of the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological wounds in the line of duty.

Iraq War veteran Josh Horton credits Hope For The Warriors® with assisting him and his family after he was injured in Iraq in 2004. “I suffered serious combat injuries while I was serving as staff sergeant for the U.S. Marine Corps in Baghdad. I underwent 23 surgeries, and Hope For The Warriors® worked alongside other organizations to organize travel and pay for my family to be with me,” Josh said. “It’s truly an amazing organization, and my family and I are so grateful for the help they provided.”

The Run For The Warriors® race series gives wounded service members encouragement and the opportunity to pursue running or walking to assist in their physical and emotional rehabilitation. The New Orleans race begins at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center along the Mississippi River. Registration is $30 with special pricing for service members. The event will end with an awards ceremony to honor local wounded heroes and families of the fallen and provide a time to remember those who have given of themselves in the line of duty.

“We are honored to stand side by side with Hope For The Warriors® to help support the men and women who have served our country and sacrificed for our freedom,” said ASA President Jane C.K. Fitch, M.D. “Run For The Warriors® has become an important part of the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ annual meeting, and we are proud to be partnered with such an important cause.”
