Tesla is expected to unveil its first electric SUV on Tuesday night. Art Wheaton, automotive expert and senior extension associate with Cornell University’s ILR School, says Tesla’s Model X will be important to the company, but not have a large impact on the automotive industry.

Wheaton says: “The new Model X is extremely important to Tesla. It needs to be able to build a wider range of products or face extinction. Similar to Porsche, it is important to have both cool luxury sports cars and a multifunctional SUV that wealthy families desire.

“The impact on the industry is not as great. The number of Model X vehicles sold will be tiny compared to most other SUVs, but important to investors in Tesla.”
