This month, a new injectable prescription drug was released to select medical professionals to treat moderate-to-severe fat below the chin, also called submental fat. According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, the medication is the same as deoxycholic acid produced by the body to absorb fats. When administered correctly, this new injectable destroys fat cells under the chin to reduce the appearance of a “double chin.” Submental fat is a common aesthetic condition that can affect even thin people. Previously, this problem could only be treated surgically.

Arisa Ortiz, MD, director of laser and cosmetic dermatology at UC San Diego Health, is one of the few physicians in the region trained to administer the prescription. She is available to discuss the benefits and potential risks for people seeking an alternative to surgery. Ortiz is also available to answer questions about next-generation injectables for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles.

Ortiz is a board-certified dermatologist who has a double-fellowship in laser and cosmetics and Mohs micrographic surgery. She specializes in noninvasive procedures, including laser skin resurfacing, dermal filler and toxin injections, body contouring, skin tightening, and the treatment of scars.
