Newswise — NYU Langone Medical Center’s musculoskeletal health experts will sponsor the 2012 New York City Arthritis Walk on June 23rd in Manhattan’s Battery Park. This is the fifth consecutive year NYU Langone has sponsored the Arthritis Foundation’s local event. NYU Langone and the Arthritis Foundation began their relationship in 1948 when rheumatologists and New York business leaders met at the medical center to create the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation – which became the Arthritis Foundation in 1964.

“By the year 2030, we expect more than 67 million Americans – roughly 25 percent of the adult population – will be living with arthritis,” said Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, the Walter A. L. Thompson Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, NYU Langone Medical Center. “Our commitment to providing patient-focused care improves the lives of those suffering with arthritis – and continued investment in science will help advance treatments that halt, and one day reverse, the effects of the disease.”

NYU Langone recently ushered in the next generation of orthopaedic, rheumatologic and rehabilitative medicine when it opened the Center for Musculoskeletal Care (CMC) – the first, and largest, stand-alone facility in the U.S. to incorporate state-of-the-art therapeutic and medical technology with the expertise of NYU Langone’s top-ranked doctors, wellness programs, biomedical research of bone and joint conditions – within a single point of care.

NYU Langone is one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers and ranked among the top 10 in the country for the musculoskeletal specialties of orthopedics, rheumatology and rehabilitation in the 2011 U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey of “Best Hospitals” in America. More information may be found at NYU Langone’s Center for Musculoskeletal Care.
