Newswise — The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation recently awarded the Professor of Survivorship to Charles Loprinzi, M.D., a Mayo Clinic medical oncologist.

The award recognizes Dr. Loprinzi's more than 15 years of research on key concerns of breast cancer survivors. Dr. Loprinzi has earned recognition for his extensive research into minimizing the long-term impact breast cancer and other cancers have on a patient's quality of life and what can be done to lessen those effects.

Dr. Loprinzi's research has explored areas such as how to treat hot flashes more effectively and the use of complementary and alternative medicines in women experiencing side effects from breast cancer treatments.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation established the Professor of Survivorship award in 1999 to advance research and awareness on the issues surrounding long-term survivorship of breast cancer. This award includes a gift of $20,000 for use in advancing breast cancer survivorship at the discretion of the professor.

Dr. Loprinzi also received the Komen Foundation's 2002 Brinker International Award for Breast Cancer Research, the Foundation's highest honor.
