Newswise — The William J. Fry Memorial Lecture Award will be presented to Paul L. Carson, PhD, at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) 2013 Annual Convention at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York, New York, on April 7, 2013. This award recognizes a current or retired AIUM member who has significantly contributed in his or her particular field to the scientific progress of medical ultrasound.
As the holder of 10 patents, Dr Carson’s commitment to the growth of medical ultrasound is not limited to academics and publishing. He recognizes the value and importance of professional societies in promoting science and is an active member of a wide variety of associations. Dr Carson’s dedication to the AIUM is significant. He has served on the AIUM’s Board of Governors and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine and has been an active contributing member for dozens of AIUM committees and subcommittees, all with the goal of ensuring quality and safety in diagnostic ultrasound.
His major scientific interest has been in medical physics with an emphasis in ultrasound, paying particular attention to the safety of diagnostic ultrasound equipment, as well as training and teaching. It is evident through the teaching and research conducted by Dr Carson of his passion for advancing medical ultrasound through the various dissertations and masters’ theses and projects he has supervised. He has mentored many postdoctoral fellows and has written hundreds of journal articles, books and chapters, monographs, abstracts, and related communications.
Dr Carson is currently a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan and also serves as associate director of basic radiological sciences at the same institution. He is concurrent professor at Nanjing University in China and scientific coordinator at the Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers Alliance of the Radiological Society of North America. His academic endeavors also include being the coinvestigator or principal investigator (PI) for 4 major grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program, and he has served as PI for dozens of funded research projects over the past 4 decades.
