The Powerball rolls on, with a total payout said to now be record a $1.3 billion. How do lotteries work? What are the chances of winning? Is the thrill of buying a lottery ticket worth the cost?

Virginia Tech statistics professor J.P. Morgan of the College of Science has taken a long look at the system and can discuss the American obsession with winning big.

Morgan is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation’s preeminent professional statistical society.

He has twice been a visiting fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences; a visiting researcher at the College of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London; and a visiting researcher in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Goldsmith’s College, University of London.
