Newswise — TOLEDO, Ohio, December 11, 2014 – ProMedica is working to facilitate change in the traditional healthcare model by expanding care beyond the health system setting to make a larger impact on the health of individuals and the community. Research shows that an individual's health is greatly impacted by social determinants like hunger, education and shelter. One way we aim to do this is through the ProMedica Ebeid Institute for Population Health in Toledo.

The Institute was established with a $1.5 million gift from philanthropist Russ Ebeid. It will bring a healthy food market to Uptown Toledo, currently classified as a “food desert” due to its lack of ready access to fresh, healthy and affordable food. The site will also house services from community organizations, such as dental services, financial literacy programs and job training.

An estimated 46 million Americans are living in poverty without access to high quality resources and services, including healthcare, nutritious food, quality education and housing. Toledo has one of the fastest growing poverty rates in the nation.

ProMedica will have management and oversight of the Institute, but is working collaboratively with civic leaders and community partners for this project and for the revitalization of Toledo.
