Newswise — Reston, VA — Newly appointed Quality Experience Committee members will identify quality, safety and patient experience priorities to improve care and health outcomes in radiology. The committee is one of four formed under the American College of Radiology (ACR) Commission on Patient- and Family-Centered Care. The commission promotes constructive relationships between radiologists, patients and caregivers and supports radiology participation in emerging alternative payment models.
“We want to ensure that all stakeholders’ points of view, perspective and experience are further integrated into the radiologist-patient relationship, transforming current culture and leading to improved patient care and satisfaction,” said James V. Rawson, MD, FACR, commission chair. “Quality Experience Committee members will also explore how to incorporate the needs, wants and value of our patients and communities in the development of standards and guidelines,” he noted. The commission’s committees will be unique and include former and current patients, members representing diverse subspecialties and allied colleagues, said Rawson.
The Quality Experience Committee is chaired by pediatric interventional radiologist C. Matthew Hawkins, MD, assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Ga. Hawkins, who specializes in vascular malformations, liver transplant interventions, varicocele embolization and venous thrombolysis, also serves as medical director of the Telemedicine Division and the Vascular Anomalies Clinic at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Ashima Lall, MD, MBA, director of PET/CT imaging at Riddle Memorial Hospital (Mainline Health) in Media, Pa., serves as vice chair. Lall, who is an MRI/MSK fellowship-trained radiologist, represents her radiology department in various hospital committees, including quality, patient safety, medical operations and peer review. She is also a green belt Six Sigma expert in process improvement methodology.

The other Commission on Patient- and Family-Centered Care committees focus on Economics, Informatics and Outreach. Resources provided by the commission enhance radiologists’ understanding of — and participation in — new practice and payment models and advise on how to provide more patient- and family-centered care.
