Newswise — NEW ORLEANS (April 29, 2013) — Robert E. Harbaugh, MD, FAANS, FACS, has been named the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) president-elect for 2013-2014. His appointment was announced during the AANS 81st Annual Scientific Meeting, held April 27-May 1, 2013 in New Orleans.

Dr. Harbaugh, Chairman and Distinguished Professor at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s Department of Neurosurgery and the Penn State College of Medicine, recently completed a three-year term as the AANS treasurer. A member of the AANS since 1986, he has presided as chair of the Finance Committee, the AANS/Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Washington Committee and the AANS Resident Mentoring Program.

“I am looking forward to working with [Incoming AANS President William] Couldwell and the other members of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors to help guide neurosurgery during a period of turbulent change in U.S. health care,” Dr. Harbaugh says, noting that in the coming year, he hopes to “work as effectively as possible to represent all North American neurosurgeons, their co-workers and their patients in every sphere of neurosurgical endeavor.”

In addition to his work in its department of neurosurgery, Dr. Harbaugh is a professor in Penn State’s Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics. He recently has been promoted to Penn State’s highest academic rank of University Distinguished Professor in addition to being appointed as the Director of the university’s Institute of the Neurosciences. He is presently a director for the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and a member of the National Football League’s Injury Surveillance and Head, Neck and Spine Committees. A sought-after symposium and conference lecturer, Dr. Harbaugh has edited three books, and published more than 230 articles, book chapters and abstracts.

Prior to completing his neurosurgical residency at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, Dr. Harbaugh earned his medical degree from the Penn State University College of Medicine in 1978.
