Newswise — Arthur Wheaton, an automotive industry specialist at Cornell University’s ILR School, says the plan allows for Google to test smaller vehicles, and Fiat Chrysler to develop new technology.

“The decision by Google to use 100 of Fiat Chrysler's new Pacifica minivan is good news for both.
“It allows Google to test their self-driving software using a vehicle that is closer in size and weight to vehicles sold today. Many of the previous autonomous vehicles were much smaller and do not represent what is being sold today in higher volumes.
“Fiat Chrysler has been behind the curve in developing new technology. Google, Ford and Uber have partnered with Volvo – Geely Automotive – and Lyft to form the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets. The goal is to increase the safety and use of autonomous vehicles and pass laws making them legal in more states.”
