Newswise — AUSTIN, Texas – Harlan Beverly, MBA ’04, has been named assistant director of Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin as of September 1, 2015.

“Harlan has been a big advocate and significant contributor to Texas Venture Labs working closely with student teams that have successfully raised venture capital over the years,” said Rob Adams, director and founder of Texas Venture Labs. “You combine this with his startup CEO experience and his academic credentials and it’s the perfect addition to our organization to keep moving the McCombs School of Business and The University of Texas at Austin further up the entrepreneurial ranks.”

In addition to his position at Texas Venture Labs, Beverly is teaching an undergraduate class at the McCombs School on entrepreneurship called Lean Startup Essentials. The course uses the “Lean Startup” model to provide students with knowledge needed to either start their own business or become a major contributor at a startup.

“It is my hope that UT will have more startups than ever before as a result of our efforts at Texas Venture Labs” said Beverly. “I think those companies will not only get started, but many will actually make money. It’s one thing to have an idea and start a business, but it’s something else entirely to actually make money and I like making money.”

Beverly has a wealth of experience founding and running successful companies. While an MBA candidate at the McCombs School of Business he co-founded Bigfoot Networks, Inc., and won first place pitching Bigfoot Networks at Moot Corp in 2004, now known as the Texas Venture Labs Investment Competition. QUALCOMM acquired Bigfoot in 2011. After Bigfoot, Beverly founded and was CEO of Karmaback, Inc., a social networking SaaS company which was acquired in 2013.

“I am excited to be back where it all started for me and share what I have learned and all of my experiences with current students interested in entrepreneurship,” said Beverly.

In his 12 years leading companies, Beverly has founded three companies, launched five hardware and 15 software projects, raised over $20M in venture financing and has over 20 patents.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Beverly worked at Intel and was responsible for architecture and development of corporate server networking products including the world's first 10-Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Beverly has a BSEE in electronics and computer science from Ohio Northern University, an MBA from the McCombs School of Business and a Ph.D. in business from Oklahoma State University.
