Newswise — The Society of Gynecologic Oncology has appointed Pierre M. Désy, MPH, CAE, as Chief Executive Officer of the Society and its Foundation for Women’s Cancer, effective April 25, 2016.

Désy brings to SGO more than 15 years of senior executive experience in the field of association management. Over the past two years, he served as Executive Director at the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (IAOMS) in Rolling Meadows, IL, where he stabilized the organization’s operations, finances, and infrastructure; strengthened governance in collaboration with the Board of Directors; and led the development and implementation of strategic initiatives that positioned the association and the foundation for significant growth.

“I am honored to be the next CEO for the Society of Gynecologic Oncology and the Foundation for Women’s Cancer,” Désy said. “I look forward to working with the Society’s and the Foundation’s boards of directors, executive committee, staff, members and stakeholders to advance the organizations’ missions.”

Prior to joining IAOMS, he was Chief Development Officer at the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). Désy provided leadership, developed and executed strategies to expand corporate sponsorships, fundraising, and new business ventures to advance ENA’s strategic plan. He also held the position of Director of the ENA Injury Prevention Institute, where he led the development of evidence-based educational programs and conceptualized the infrastructure for the association’s now three Institutes (Research, Education, Quality and Safety). His tenure at the ENA was 14 years.

SGO President Robert L. Coleman, MD, said Désy has the right blend of experience, energy and enthusiasm to move the SGO and Foundation forward.

“Pierre understands the health care environment and has a remarkable record of achievement in virtually every aspect of society leadership,” Dr. Coleman said. “His success particularly in the fundraising arena will be a boon to our development initiatives.”

Désy holds a certificate in health care management from the Université de Montréal, a bachelor of psychology degree from Loyola University in Chicago, and a master of public health from the University of Illinois at Chicago. A Certified Association Executive (CAE), he is active with the American Society of Association Executives, serving on the Professional Development Section Council, and the Association Forum, where he chairs the Welcoming Environment Committee.

As CEO, Désy will be the chief staff executive responsible for management of the SGO, the Foundation and its staff. Reporting to the Board of Directors of both organizations, he will provide strategic leadership and have fiscal, program, and administration responsibility.

Désy will oversee strategic and tactical initiatives, operations, governance, financial management, revenue generation, and board and leadership support. He will be responsible for effectively communicating both organizations’ purpose, plans, goals, and objectives to internal and external stakeholders, including members, industry, and the general public.

Désy replaces Mary C. Eiken, MS, RN, who is stepping down from her position as SGO Executive Director after more than a decade of service.

“Pierre is following in the footsteps of a powerful and dynamic leader in Mary,” said SGO President-Elect Jeffrey M. Fowler, MD. “He obviously has big shoes to fill, but we could not have found a better person to meet the challenge.”
