Newswise — Gynecologic oncology research, education and awareness took a historic step forward on Jan. 1, 2016, when the Society of Gynecologic Oncology’s Foundation for Gynecology Oncology and the Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC) became one foundation within the SGO.

The merged foundation will retain the Foundation for Women’s Cancer name, capitalizing on its strong brand recognition in our advocacy and research community.“This is an important milestone in the evolution of our Society,” said David G. Mutch, MD, who will serve as Chair of the new FWC. “It will consolidate all Foundation activities for the benefit of our Society and our patients.”

SGO President Robert L. Coleman, MD, thanked Society members for their generous support of both Foundations over the years.

“We are blessed with a loyal and giving membership,” Dr. Coleman said. “Our charge is to remain a responsible steward of their financial support and volunteer time.”The new foundation will continue to promote and encourage research in gynecologic oncology and will have the opportunity to significantly expand its investigational footprint. It will maintain core programs such as the Race to End Women’s Cancer and build upon the success of the existing Survivor Courses.

“We intend to solidify a robust SGO endowment that will allow us to fulfill our mission in perpetuity,” Dr. Mutch added. “We are very excited to focus our efforts in a singular and coordinated way to greatly expand our outreach to the SGO family, partners, patients and families."

SGO President-Elect Jeffrey Fowler, MD, said that while the purpose of the foundation may sound familiar, the structure and governance are new.

“Our integrated governance structure will allow for streamlined decision-making and effective use of volunteer time,” he said. “It also will enable us to improve use of staff resources to ensure economies of scale, and to implement a unified process to facilitate fund-raising.”
