Newswise — PHILADELPHIA (September 25, 2014) — Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) recently earned recognition for its efforts to serve the region’s veteran population.

U.S. News & World Report included SJU in its 2015 ranking of “Best Colleges for Veterans.” The University ranked No. 2 among colleges and universities in the North for helping veterans and active-duty service members apply to, pay for and complete their degrees. Saint Joseph’s was also recognized as a 2015 Military Friendly® School by MilitaryFriendly.com, the originator of the group of education and career resources for veterans and their families.

In June of 2014, Saint Joseph’s opened an Office of Veterans Services to serve as a central place for student veterans to meet with experienced staff for academic and specialized support. The office also will offer an entrepreneurship program for veterans with disabilities in spring 2015. This intensive curriculum will support veterans with an interest in creating their own businesses to achieve financial security.

“This ranking and Military Friendly designation is further indication of the priority and commitment Saint Joseph’s places on the men and women who have served our country,” says director Ralph Galati ’70 (USAF). “Veterans are a growing population with specific needs and we’re pleased to offer support and information.”

Galati, who spent 14 months as a POW in Vietnam, is acutely aware of the challenges veterans often face as they transition from service to citizenship. “At Saint Joseph’s, our objective is to address the unique set of issues faced by our veterans, their spouses, and even their dependents,” he says. “We serve as a hub of resources to ensure that everyone has access to an established program that addresses each of his or her specific requirements.”
