Newswise — The Supreme Court upholds college affirmative action program that helped minority students get into the University of Texas. Jeffrey Segal, chair of the political science department at Stony Brook University and a prominent scholar in the field of law and judicial politics, best known for his Supreme Court expertise, says:

"I'm surprised that Kennedy supported the plan. He had never before supported race-based affirmative action. It may be the case that his vote was in part due to the fact that had he voted the other way, the Texas policy would have been upheld by the 4-4 splits that the Court has been trying to avoid."

Segal's areas of interest include Supreme Court decision making and the nomination/confirmation of Supreme Court justices. He has co-authored more than 60 articles and seven books on the law, judicial processes, and related subjects.
