• Kidney disease is a growing public health threat affecting more than 20 million Americans.• Since 1996, the American Society of Nephrology and its foundation have awarded more than $25 million in grants and travel support. Addressing the 8th leading cause of death in the United States requires the attention of the world’s best and brightest researchers. In 2012, the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) created the ASN Foundation for Kidney Research “to prevent and cure kidney diseases through research and innovation.”

The ASN Foundation’s early success in raising $17 million dollars, funding 10 new and 10 continuing fellows annually, and providing career development and student scholar grants will advance investigators’ careers, build students’ interest in nephrology, and change outcomes for patients with kidney disease.

The ASN Foundation is proud to announce two new named fellowships and the creation of an important new clinical scholars program.

The Joseph A. Carlucci Research Fellowship Thanks to the generous support of the American Renal Patient Care Foundation, this fellowship honors Joseph A. Carlucci and the decades he has spent devoted to improving care for dialysis patients. Cofounder of American Renal Associates, Mr. Carlucci advocates for involving physicians at the local level to promote excellence in patient care. He has instituted industry-wide approaches to setting and reaching the highest standards of care for the more than 400,000 Americans who undergo dialysis each year.

The Donald E. Wesson Research FellowshipASN honors Donald E. Wesson, MD, FASN, Vice Dean of the Texas A&M College of Medicine and Chief Academic Officer at Scott and White Healthcare. Dr. Wesson’s many contributions to the society, nephrology, and medicine include serving on the ASN leadership as Secretary-Treasurer since 2007; promoting a strong focus on the society’s primary goals while insuring the highest standards of leadership, ethics, and medical professionalism; and guiding the society through challenging fiscal times. His vision and voice have been central to leading concrete changes that will improve ASN’s focus on diversity and inclusion.

The William and Sandra Bennett Clinical Scholars ProgramThis new program for clinical scholars, generously funded by William M. Bennett, MD, FASN, and Sandra Bennett, will support the careers of promising clinical scholars in nephrology. A Past President of ASN and founding Editor-in-Chief of CJASN, Dr. Bennett has often been called the consummate nephrologist. An expert in transplant nephrology, Dr. Bennett has improved the lives of countless patients, administered hundreds of clinical studies, authored over 450 peer-reviewed articles, and mentored hundreds of students, residents, and fellows.
