Newswise — WASHINGTON (Oct. 8, 2014) — The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is now accepting applications to the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medicine Certificate Program for the summer 2015 term.

“This program is designed to provide candidates with the foundational coursework, standardized test preparation, and access to real-world experience necessary for a successful matriculation into medical school,” said Lisa S. Schwartz, Ed.D., program director of the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medicine Program at SMHS. “This is the next step for someone who wants to change their career and pursue his or her goal of becoming a physician.”

The GW Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medicine Certificate Program benefits those who want to apply to medical school, but have not yet taken the general and organic chemistry, biology, and physics courses necessary for admission. Although not a prerequisite of all medical schools, a biochemistry course is included in the curriculum to prepare students to successfully perform on the newly designed MCAT exam in 2015. The program will also provide candidates with the preparatory professional skills to complete the medical school admission process, including interview and application completion strategies.

“This program is specifically designed for top quality candidates who are pursuing a career change into medicine and need to fulfill the requisite preparatory science coursework. This program will advantage candidates by showcasing the applicants’ capacity to perform well in medical school,” said Schwartz. “Faculty mentors from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences are poised to work with each candidate to maximize individual performance in the program, on the MCAT, and during the admission process.”

The program is part of the continuing expansion of the health sciences programs at SMHS. As part of a University-wide initiative for strategic investment and innovation, this program will be supported with new laboratories and facilities at the GW Virginia Science & Technology Campus in Ashburn, Virginia.
