CORNELL UNIVERSITY MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICEDec. 5, 2016 The ‘Taiwan card’ is bound to backfire spectacularly

Jessica Chen Weiss, professor of government and author of “Powerful Patriots: Nationalist Protest in China's Foreign Relations” says that by hinting at Taiwan as an independent government, Trump is jeopardizing China-U.S. relations on the one topic over which Beijing is likely to retaliate.

Weiss says:

“Playing the so-called ‘Taiwan card’ to pressure China on trade or other issues is likely to backfire spectacularly.

“Taiwan is one of China’s most sensitive core interests. Any indications of support for Taiwan independence will infuriate both the Chinese government and public. Beijing is more likely to retaliate than offer concessions on other issues, risking conflict and terminating cooperation with the United States.”
