Newswise — The Wistar Institute has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust to endow a professorship in cancer research.
“It is an extreme honor that the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust has recognized The Wistar Institute for excellence in cancer research,” said Russel E. Kaufman, M.D., Wistar Institute President and CEO. “This endowed professorship propels Wistar’s work, creates opportunities for our faculty, and is a tribute to the vision of the trustees of W.W. Smith.”
The Trust has a more than 30-year history of making contributions to medical research by identifying promising researchers and funding unique projects, and is one of the few foundations supporting medical research exclusively in the greater Philadelphia region.
“We are thrilled to work with The Wistar Institute as it grows and furthers its mission to ameliorate the effects of cancer through applied research,” said Louise Havens, medical grant administrator at the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust. “We are confident that the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust Professorship in Cancer Research will make a difference in recruiting and supporting talented scientists to Wistar.”
The Wistar Institute has been a W. W. Smith Charitable Trust grant recipient in basic, biomedical research in cancer, AIDS and heart disease for more than thirty years. Their support enables Wistar scientists to pursue ground-breaking research in new directions, most recently into the understanding of cardiac injury and early detection of heart failure associated with certain breast cancer therapies.
The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust is a private foundation established through the will of William Wikoff Smith. Based in West Conshohocken, Pa., the Trust provides grants in three areas: medical research in cancer, heart disease and AIDS; financial aid for college students; and basic needs for children, families and the elderly.
