Newswise — PHILADELPHIA—(June 29, 2016)—The Wistar Institute, a global biomedical research leader in cancer, immunology and infectious diseases, is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeff Fahnoe to the position of Chief Information Officer. Fahnoe will implement a research computing environment to support Wistar’s expanding scientific enterprise. Building for growth, Fahnoe will lead the development of IT resources to manage complex data systems, ensure data security and develop high performing IT operations and long-term computing strategies at Wistar—the nation’s first independent biomedical research institute and a National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center.

“Jeff’s leadership and expertise implementing critical, high-performing IT support systems will shape and deliver effective technologies to advance and streamline the work of Wistar researchers,” said Dario C. Altieri, M.D., Wistar President and CEO. “In this time of incredible growth, Jeff’s IT initiatives will improve the scientists’ day-to-day research abilities, offer data protection across the Institute and put in place strong IT systems for the Institute as a whole.”

Fahnoe will manage an IT staff that provides critical infrastructure support relating to network architecture, maintenance, and operations, as well as management of data security and web-based and research applications.

“My goal is to elevate Wistar’s IT infrastructure to meet the needs of our investigators and the Institute to advance critical research,” he said. “To do this, IT will create a secure, stable environment of systems that are agile and able to address new opportunities as they arise while allowing our scientists to work uninterrupted and with continued success.”

Fahnoe comes to Wistar from the University of Pennsylvania where he was Senior Director of Operations and Planning at the School of Dental Medicine. He oversaw planning and management of large-scale IT initiatives and collaborative projects to align and improve daily operations. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and holds a Master of Education in Education Technology from the University of Delaware. He also has a Biological Education Certification from the University of Delaware. In his free time, Fahnoe coaches his two sons’ soccer, basketball and track teams.
