Adam Seth Levine is assistant professor of government at Cornell University and author of "American Insecurity: Why Our Economic Fears Lead to Political Inaction". He believes Trump’s refusal to participate in the FOX-hosted debate is an agenda-setting move that questions a key part of traditional campaigning.

Levine says:

“Everyone is talking about the Megyn Kelly aspect of this story, but Trump is also implicitly calling out a key aspect of income inequality. Note that he’s not just saying that he won’t participate because of Kelly, but he’s saying that he won’t participate because of Fox News more generally.

“He’s making statements such as, ‘why should the networks continue to get rich on the debates?’ and ‘why do I have to make Fox rich?’. This is an agenda-setting move.

“He’s pointing out something that most voters probably don’t pay much attention to, which is the fact that presidential campaigns are big business and that there are people out there making a ton of money off of the controversy and attention. In doing so, he’s questioning the legitimacy of a key aspect of traditional campaigning.”
